Departure of President of Windows Steven Sinofsky ‘unrelated to Windows 8’, say sources.
In a surprise move that comes just weeks after the release of his division’s most important release in decades, Mr Sinofsky’s departure precipitated a widespread management shake-up.
Tipped as a potential chief executive at Microsoft, Business Insider claims Mr Sinofsky’s departure came after he demanded to be anointed officially by current CEO Steve Ballmer. The site claims that Sinofsky threatened to quit and “Ballmer called his bluff”.
His duties will be divided between a pair of executives who will answer directly to chief executive Steven Ballmer. Julie Larson-Green was promoted to lead Windows software and hardware engineering. Microsoft chief financial officer Tami Reller will run the business side of Windows in addition to her current duties.
Prior to the launch of Windows 8, a CNET profile of the media-shy Mr Sinofsky claimed that the ambitious executive had riled colleagues by aggressively keeping Windows division products and services away from other Microsoft departments.
The company did not comment on why Sinofsky is leaving.
